It would be great to get a range of 'blank' (but naturally degraded) audio storage mediums, and gently layer them in a chronological arrangement.
The piece could move from wax cylinders, through vinyl and anologue tapes, to cds, mp3s and radio interference etc.
I envisage it being rather costly to obtain such antiquated devices though..

Well, thinking of production tools as instruments leads to musicians
like Sam Beam, who's first Iron & Wine album was recorded to 4-track,
and has a great lo-fi warmth to it.  It's the same as with analogue
synths or tube amps.  I'd love to actually record to wax cylinder
myself.
