Re: [microsound] solid portable audio recording

Yes, all of the manufacturers think consumers are hot for CF and that's fine, but the thing they need to figure out is there are many recordists who are not interested in buying gear aimed at concert recording with low gain, high noise and low headroom mic preamps. If they need to hire and pay good money for audio engineers who understand this basic need, then so be it.

For whatever reason, HiMD proves that it is very possible to build a very good mic preamp in a cheap unit. For recording ambience and quiet sounds with low noise mics, one needs at least 60 dB gain (HiMD is 75dB) and low noise (HiMD is ~ -126dBU). We might be offered some great, low cost options from Sony and others, but we may have to raise some stink if the current trend persists. Sony did listen to recordists when we complained about the USB upload silliness.

I very, very much enjoying that a student can invest $170 into a recorder that she/he can expand with a $70 PB224 phantom mic power supply and a pair of very low noise mics for $400 more. Artists and pros who can spend more will, but people are getting into enjoying sound because of low cost options. Rob D.

They did a big road plan PR event with their future plans and there was no MD in it, Hi or not.
