I agree, any documentation needs imagination to imagine how the real
space was, and documentation is always missing crucial parts.
Sometimes imagination works better if the capturing is limited.
Ever wondered why black and white photos often work better than colour
photos? (It depends on the context of course, if you need colour a
drawing might be better than a photo...)
And for the documentation of an installation, a complete description
which would enable another person to recreate the whole thing, is
probably the most important part anyway.
