RE: [microsound] protools and m-auudio - question?

ProTools LE needs a (low end) digidesign card. It will not run with M- 
Audio hardware.

ProTools M-Powered will run on most but not all M-Audio hardware (see  
their website for the list). The actual software is for most intents  
is the same and file compatible (with minor snags).

You can't run one version on the other's hardware though I've heard  
of some people quasi-hacking an older version of ProTools LE to work  
with M-Powered demo drivers. Then again if you go for older versions  
and older operating systems I'm sure you can find ProTools Free  
floating around (works in 16 bit with most hardware but only with  
Win98 or OS9 whatever)
