Well, perhaps it is also possible we are both correct, because I would

i don't necessarily agree that a change in political atmosphere equals a change in the way people think, but that's another argument... ;-)

But, of course this is also going to be different from university to
university; perhaps I simply had the misortune of being at the wrong
place.

totally agree. there's a broad spectrum of ideologies within the american
educational system, which naturally filters down to the student body.
then again, there are always "pockets" of people who have similar
concepts and approaches, you just have to find them. with the advent
of the internet this is so much easier.

Also, I'm really referring to average WORKING musicians, in or out of
academia, who play instruments for a living. There's always a minority
with a totally different viewpoint but by and large there's a pretty
consistent idea on what music is. I say this having played piano on cruise
ships for a couple of years! Usually when I meet artists or students who
want to become artists, they seem much more interested in exploring and
experimenting.

we can definitely agree that cruise ships performers are a different breed...
and usually filipino!

However, I have to grant that all this is very personally biased, since
the art community has turned out to be much more interested in /
supportive of my work than the traditional music community, I feel more in
tune with them naturally.

personally, i don't attempt to crash the "ivory towers" of academia with my work,
for i expect it to fall on unappreciative ears. i concentrate on pinpointing areas
where my work is in sympathy with its surroundings and focus my energies on
those situations. a polka player shouldn't play in a country western bar unless
he or she wants to get pelted with beer bottles.
unless you're a bit of a masochist.
