Re: [microsound] re: Help for the beginner and Hello's

yes, soundonsound is pretty good, their editor in chief paul white writes very acclaimed books too. do watch out a bit on their forum, which can be a bit hostile, but very knowledgable.
they're real snobs sometimes too, only want to use 2000$ mics and stuff.

Compression isn't so hard to explain though learning how to best apply it is. It's compressing the dynamic range, in other words the relation from soft to loud, typically making things more uniformly loud. Often you are also doing some limiting, that's taking the occasional very loud sound and reducing it to merely as loud as a certain level.

something which took me long to realize is that compression is a very flexible mastering and even sound design tool. you're really working on the waveform of the sound.
for example, you can *add* dynamics to dull sounding drums, by setting your compressors attack long, this will spare the onset of your sound of getting squashed. then the part after the attack gets attenuated, thus making a less bloated sound.
just spend a night with an audio editor, some samples and only a compressor and you'll get the hang of it quickly.
