this topic always seems to come up here all the time. i don' t mind, but maybe we should or (rather someone should) put up a page dedicated to this kind of thing on the microsound website... twiki or whatever its called... some kind of resource that microsounders can add to...

don't know about anyone but myself, but i have and like the edirol r1
for $500-ish. [or the new r09 for around $400., which i don't have]
it's all digital- no tapes or minidiscs- just a usb cord!

for better fidelity you'll need to buy another microphone [besides the
built in ones], but you can get started with them. and from your
requirements, i think you're going to need a new microphone to get
what you're looking for anyway.
