don't know about anyone but myself, but i have and like the edirol r1 for $500-ish. [or the new r09 for around $400., which i don't have] it's all digital- no tapes or minidiscs- just a usb cord!

for better fidelity you'll need to buy another microphone [besides the
built in ones], but you can get started with them. and from your
requirements, i think you're going to need a new microphone to get
what you're looking for anyway.
