Re: [microsound] field recording equipment

M-Audio also makes a similar product
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack2496-main.html

also minidisc recorders are a fairly inexpensive solution. sony makes a
decent one.

If play back will be on headphones, many field recording folks like binaural
microphone systems. The standard is the Neumark dummy head but it is rather
pricey if you can't find someone to loan you one. There are cheaper
binaural options particularly if you have a little skill at electronics and
can mod inexpensive mics. A google search on binaural should get you more
info. Wikipedia also has an article on binaural recording.

For specific single sounds a shotgun style mic may work best. Some type of
omni directional mic for the full environment. PZM mics might also be worth
experimenting with though I've never used them in a field situation.

hope that helps
cheers!
