Re: [microsound] censorship art (worshipping the beep)
Never heard it, maybe go hunt it down out of curiosity.
I dont use beeps in the context of censorship of obscene material, but I
love to use beeps and similar 'interface sounds' as part of a track, such as
at the beginning of a new mutation as if a button had been pushed or
something. Or just as one of the elements, maybe with some reverb to catch
and smear some of the tonality out further.
Probably the closest would be the track I submitted to the exquisite mix II
CD, which uses a sample from a video of British soldiers videotaping
themselves brutally crushing an Iraqi demonstration that had turned violent.
The soldier holding the camera emitted a constant stream of obscenities and
sadomasochistic encouragement to his fellow soldiers beating some poor
Iraqis they'd dragged into a courtyard, which were bleeped out in the
internet-released recording.
Turned my stomach to watch, but those samples were golden.
That song's in my set for tonight. =]

There's this tune called "Beep" by the Pussycat Dolls (featuring
will.i.am).
that incorporates the censoring beep sound into its rhythmic scheme. I
know
many musicians incorporated the "parental advisory" sign into their cover
art (sometimes in a transformed fashion), but I've never heard somebody
"composing" with the beep.
Any thoughts on that? Or earlier examples where the beep or other elements
were used in this way?
