great to be able to see how Autechre or whoever created their music,
and trying to understand their approach is a valid thing to do, IMO.
For example I once was trained as a saxophone player (I abandoned it)
and of course I was rehearsing by playing Coltrane or Rollins soli.
This must no be the end of it all of course, and one has to go beyond
that, but as a learning exercise it is wonderful. Software like Max,
Pd or Supercollider really encourages to start from a half-ready patch
or even from a complete patch and mess with it, so this is a natural
thing to do.
Another aspect is reuse of (parts of) other peoples patches. This is
dangerous ground of course, because there you're directly copying
something. But art doesn't get born in an empty space, and if you copy
the simpleFM-patch or even a more complicated patch, is this so
different from using a Yamaha DX7 to do 80s pop music? Personally I
encourage everyone to use my patches freely. Many of them are
available on http://pure-data.sf.net It makes me happy to see that
what was useful to me can be useful to others, too. And I'm sure,
others would do better music with these patches than me. So I don't
have a problem with that.
