Indeed it is. I'd like to add another point to it, or rather a little
story. Miller Puckette of Max/MSP and Pd fame, some years ago started
the Pd Repertory Project: http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/pdrp/latest/doc/
with this goal:
The last 35 years have seen the development of a significant
repertory of music involving concert instruments whose sound is
enhanced or transformed using live electronics. The realizations of
many of these pieces have depended on specific items of hardware or
software which, while chosen for their expediency at the times of the
premieres of the pieces, will eventually become impossible to find,
and in some cases are already becoming scarce.
The Pd repertory project provides realizations of four important
pieces from this repertory. It is hoped that this collection will
expand to include at least a dozen pieces for solo instrument or
small ensemble and electronics.
This is another example for a motivation to re-create something
originally written by other people: teaching.
However shortly after his first annoucement Miller had to take the
site, or rather the patches on that site, offline, because of a letter
from IRCAM, who as far as I know basically accused him of copyright
violation, maybe in regard to his realizations of Pierre Boulez
pieces, but I don't know any details for sure.
Anyway of course Miller's project obviously was done with the best
intentions of providing a deeper insight into some classical pieces of
computer music together with a way to perform them on stage, the
implementation being freely available free of charge etc. And he never
tried to make these works appear as his own compositions.
Morale of story: Some people - or institutions - just don't get it.
