Re: [microsound] myspce comunity

you're absolutely right - i haven't really dug beyond the surface of myspace. i got frustrated with the ad riddled homepage trying to find out actually what myspace was and basically dismissed it as friendster for tweens with a crappy MP3 built in.

now, when you say 'songs' what does that mean in terms of length/ size? could you do one extended piece instead of four shorts ones, i.e. like a DJ or live set?

i still think the formatting looks terrible. something like beatport or bleep seems so much slicker in terms of a music database.

and all that 'friend crap', animated GIFs and senseless forums? graham has 823 friends and counting... i don't buy into it. it just propagates some kind of superficial adolescent mentality of popularity.

but then again, most of the world actually does operate on some kind of superficial adolescent mentality of popularity.

Then with all due respect you do not see very far into this particular thing, Graham.

In a situation where one is guerilla promoting one's output, a MySpace Music profile (not the personal ones, which is probably what you are familiar with, and what most 'kids' have) provides all that MP3.com used to and more.

They host up to 4 of your songs, either downloadable or stream only, with an accompanying image, lyrics, etc.
You can customize your profile heavily and easily- which in the case of most profiles is a bad thing, but as with anything garbage in garbage out.
They are searchable and subscribe-able, massive networks of 'freinds' and communites can be created by anyone, blog functions, events calendars, messaging, etc. And nearly EVERYONE under the age of thirty has one, so you can easily infect a massive fanbase if you have a mind to.

Also useful is a LiveJournal, if you have blogging tendencies.
