also consider that max and pd are very similar, but max has better  
documentation, which can be very helpful, especially if you learn  
from scratch without workshops etc.
if you're as student, then max is priced ok, otherwise it's a bit  
expensive.

i personally prefer max-msp-jitter over reaktor. i found reaktor very  
cpu intensive and i understood max a lot better from the start, i  
think because of the documentation and the fact that you always need  
to know what you're doing.

max and pd are also very extendible, which makes for a lot of extra  
features made by 3rd parties.

super collider and chuck are text based, which is a different way of  
working, but also very nice.
super collider is more mature than chuck.
