Re: [microsound] renoise

Well I guess I haven't understood the specificity of a tracker yet. I didn't know this term before the thread on this list. I've been using Renoise for a week, doing some old-school ebm tracks "a la" Klinik, but still haven't discovered the functionalities you are talking about. Just one question about the track you posted: is it done live? what is it you cannot do (or not easily) in a GUI sequencer? Is it the specificity I haven't discovered yet? (sorry to sound so newbie, but I really am discovering trackers now.)

Command in trackers can lead to amazing sound treatments and even some kind
of algorithmic programming of parameter changes. So far, the most advanced
piece of control I've found is in LSDj's Table features (that I've
implemented in my own littlegptracker). Basically it works like a parameter
sequencer running at 96PPQ and allowing some kind of conditional GOTO's. It
can make the dullest sound become very alive. Basically think of the
machinedrum/Monomachine parameter locks running way faster with conditional
looping in it. I haven't seen one traditional sequencer implementing
anything like it.

For example this track:

http://discodirt.10pm.org/tardline_raster.mp3

uses barely 3 samples (BD/SD/Hat) and 8 small looped waveforms + a stolen
ping from Pink Floyd's "echoes". All variety of timbre comes just from table
manipulation on the base waveforms. All dry and no FX's added.

Gosh, just when i thought my MS20 was quite complex!

what i meant is that you can change your arppeggios in Reason just by
changing the notes you play live. Now you can really do it live. I don't
know if it is as efficient as Renoise, I've been trying this software
for only a week or so, and even if i use Reason a lot, I don't play live
with it. But Renoise seems pretty cool.

This is not an arpeggiated sequence or something, I edit the sequence
realtime.
Check this video for a comparison with the Synthesizers.com Q960 module:

Well, I think you can do that kind of stuff live in Reason 4, using
the RPG8 module...
You just have to play your chords live, and it is appergiatted
automatically.

I'm not sure if this is possible in 'normal' sequencers, but it
works amazing in Renoise:

curious what kind of creative advantage/perspective this kind of
sequencer might give over more modern sequencers, like ableton live
or logic?

is their any reason to go down this route aside from an interest in
its historical/gaming context? i know people like autechre and
whatnot claim to use them... i think maybe venetian snares too...
but i just don't see the advantage... it seems so archaic and
unintuitive to me...

thoughts?
