Re: [microsound] Re: stockhausen RIP: NYTimes article

Ben

I share your disappointment at the 9/11 quote attributed to
Stockhausen being placed so central to his life and work. I think the
9/11 statement is not accurate - this correction:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/attackonlondon/comment/story/0,,1525261,00.html

published in 2004 in the UK Guardian says:

'Face up to the truth' (Comment, last week) was wrong to say that the
composer Karlheinz Stockhausen was 'delighted' at the attack on the
World Trade Centre, describing it as 'a great work of art'. In fact,
Stockhausen made a statement to the effect that he believed the devil
was still an active force in the world and condemned the attack as
'Lucifer's greatest work of art'. Apologies.

(The same newspaper had published an earlier apology, in October 2001:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/corrections/story/0,3604,576020,00.html)

Somewhere I remember also reading in 2001 that the journalist who
broke the 'story' apologised for his misrepresentation - though I
can't trace a link for that. Stockhausen seemed to keep a dignified
(or could that possibly be Cagean?) silence on the matter.

However, I think that pinning that lie onto Stockhausen's corpse, and
putting at the front of his life simply reinforces the perceived and
the real potency that noise/sound art/music/audio - what you will -
still has.

Entirely unrelated to that, who was the drummer who played with you at
the London Barbican Centre one sunny Saturday afternoon in (I
think?)1999? Or are you not the mutantrumpet Ben Neill? Great fun,
great set.

Johnny
