> How essential is your music?
1. To me, very much.

2. No.
> Do you care if people understand what you are trying to do?
3. No. Define "understand"... It's a lost battle if you expect a
thorough understanding, it's pointless (and prone to subjective
misconceptions) if you settle for anything less than that.
> Does it matter who's giving the opinion? ( I ,mean do some people's

4. Some, yes (those that I respect). But even then, sensibilities
differ and "every piece of music is like a rugged rock with countless
grooves and carved with drawings on the surface and beneath, which
people decipher and interpret in a thousand different ways, none of
them being the best nor the truest." (Xenakis)
There's also a good story along the same lines between Beethoven and
Goethe that Lachenmann told us last week: Beethoven was startled at
Goethe's reaction upon listening to one of his pieces, expecting him
to display one that was consistent with a brilliant mind reacting to
another brilliant mind. Unfortunately, Goethe just brought out a
napkin to extinguish a tear of emotion, causing Beethoven to become
incensed at the emotional, rather than intellectual, response.
Thus, expectations vary and I don't really get blindly caught up in
that respect I feel for the people worthy of it.

No (see 2. above).

Yes, if only to make them open their ears.
