[microsound] blocks of time
I think the
“rave DJ” is probably the /only/ person in 20th century pop culture
who
any authority on sculpting blocks of time longer than an hour or
two (not
saying it's being sculpted in interesting ways, but it's at least
being
sculpted).
are you talking about in music?
filmmakers deal with anything from 1min - 120+ mins
so they are still the kings of hour plus blocks of time
and sound artists or installation artists deal with longer blocks of
time - more like macro-events
which has been an area I'm moving into lately i.e. longer cycles and
rhythms of time and what takes place inside them
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
also, 'narrative' is a rather stuffy (albeit modernist) concept and
it doesn't really exist in music
there is musical structure which imparts a context (the old:
'expectation, frustration, release' arc of activity)
the only narrative is the one the listener constructs based on their
own associations and memories
