Re: [microsound] death of monoculture
What make sb vastly important or not is his work... You think
prokofiev or stravinsky are vastly important or not?? I think they
are (and even if they are not, since all the world talks about them
they should be known in their own country as well, right?), but
russian governments for lots of years (and maybe even know as I am
told) don' t, because of political reasons...
Societies may have their own cultures or adopt other societies
cultures or even create their own cultures at a point. We may have
several socierties adopting or defining a common "cultures", but in
what extent, and by whom?. I still not consider "habits" to be
culture. Culture has to do with consciousness choices and spirit, it
can' t be what you hear when having drinks in a nearby pub.
Anyway, all these are personal thoughts, not facts, I won' t argue
more on them, my point is though that I don' t like "monoculture", I
want variety in my life and I admire individuality.

i'm writing this facetiously: if they hadn't heard of them, then
they can't've been so vastly important, could they? this sentence
smacks of the very idea that 'freedom of choice' is supposed to be
opposed to. if you're really into freedom of choice, then how do
you support the idea of 'composers of vast importance' in the first
place?
to stop being facetious, i do believe in 'composers of vast
importance'. but i think to support this, or to make this
meaningful, there has to be at least some level of monoculture
(perhaps monocultures is better: a limited number of different
monocultures, with fractal-like edges but overlapping or shared
cores.)
