i completely disagree with you on this point. in my experience, culture has
to do *fundamentally* with what you hear having drinks in a nearby pub.
more broadly speaking, your culture comes from and is influenced by where
you were born, were you have lived, and where you live now: it's defined
and maintained by geography (both political and physical), which places you
in situations where you don't have a choice about the cultural artifacts
surrounding you.
maybe 'high' culture has to with conscious choices, but i personally don't
find 'high' culture to be particularly important, and in any case i don't
think it's the kind of shared culture we're talking about when we're
discussing (popular) music.
