no type newsletter ~ 2000.09.07

http://www.notype.com ~ online since october 1998 & still free

[ apologies for promotion & crossposting ~ please notify us if you
wish to be removed from this mailing list. ]

so we're preparing ourselves for a no type marathon: in the next 6
weeks, there will be 2 new releases every week, from collaborators new &
old: matrix assimilation, james schidlowsky, zammuto, oeuf korreckt,
speech.fake, anaesthesia, viratone ballad, not to mention no type's
newly appointed field agents philémon girouard & aimé dontigny.

this has already begun & will proceed throughout october 1st, which as
some of you know (or guessed) is no type's second birthday!

[028] anaesthesia ~ organic phase smear

anaesthesia is part of no type history: one of the 3 original releases,
their self-titled album gathered rave reviews & thousands of downloads;
no mean feat considering those mp3s were sometimes 7 or 8 megabytes of
size! almost 2 years later, this is their new album featuring more home
recordings of the experimental kind. this time, they forsook the
"ambient" route & went for the jugular: electric violin, keyboards &
various oddball instruments make this a baroque joyride, culminating
into the epic "part 3", which as you may have guessed is the follow-up
to "part 1" & "part 2" from their previous album. all in all, you'll go
from trippy overloaded swooshes (as promised in the title, "organic
phase smear") to cleancut, improvised jams, with all the virtuosity &
irony we've come to expect from these guys left intact.

[029] l'île de béton ~ couche de matériau insectoïde

we would have you believe that l'île de béton is some theoretical
high-brow anti-entertainment rhetoric disguised as music, but then we'd
be bullshitting you a bit. so why not say it as it is: this is the
meeting of *one* turntable and *one* casio keyboard. the results:
inimaginably obscure yet strangely funny. the whole spectrum of pop
music is slain to death (or at least something rather painful): pat
benatar, a-ha, sugar hill gang, the black hole (yep, the disney movie) &
so much more you'll fall on your knees crying just thinking about it ~
so why bother, just go listen to the damn thing!

[030] philémon & alex warren ~ potlatch w

philémon is the saxophone player from napalm jazz & has devoted much of
his time outside of the band fabricating his own music. the first of it
to see the light of day, potlatch w came in fact from some sort of a
dare, in the form of an actual potlatch (in true guy debord style, &
please do expell us) with alexandre warren providing the other half of
the exchange with a short story which, unfortunately for non-francophone
visitors, can only be read in the original language. feel free to offer
to translate it, but who knows, we may just do it ourselves at some
point in the future if such a thing is requested. but what about the
music? bare korg lines, lossy pick-up hiss & other audio damage. oh, &
beats. why, you could dance to it...

[031] speech.fake ~ image type/composite

hailing from beautiful halifax, nova scotia is noise artist & producer
cal crawford. on top of running his own record label, impulse to injury,
cal makes difficult music ~ though here you must understand "difficult"
in the sense of ralf wehowsky or merzbow ~ under the name speech.fake.
his work is appearing for the first time on no type with image
type/composite, an suite of 8 intense noise pieces, creating some of the
most beautifully unbearable atmosphere heard on disk anywhere by these
ears. if you want to have an idea, just take a look at the artwork...
just to add to the propaganda: impulse to injury will soon release a
double cd compilation featuring the likes of crawling with tarts, cock
e.s.p. or voice crack, not to mention period three (ack!) you shall know
more at some point whose location on the time-space continuum no one
knows for sure.

tomas jirku finally on cd!

it's now officially out: tomas jirku's debut cd, variants, has just come
out on the respected alien8 recordings. as you may know already, the
"variants" have been released on no type a few months ago to great
success, & after their complete deletion from the site, the best
selections have been reworked & pasted on this 12-track cd. what to
expect? profound, yet highly digital dub lines served with solid click
beats. anyone into pole, farben, kit clayton or vladislav delay ought to
check this out, because tomas is clearly in the same league. need proof?
his next (yet untitled) cd is poised to come out on mille plateaux
affiliated label force inc. also on the burner is a projected reissue of
tomas' no type classic "immaterial", as well as some material he made in
a more idm-ish vein.

eucci, at the jenifer st western.

jeffrey shell aka eucci can't stay still; music of his keeps popping up
on his web site & various locations around the internet. his latest
installment is the result of "extra gear & many extra bottles of absolut
mandarin" recorded at their once eastern headquarters, now doomed to be
replaced by some corporate atrocity or another. this is live & this is
available throughout september.

late mail.

i've been especially awful at keeping up with my mail until recently. if
you've sent us anything in the past months & are wondering whether
you'll ever receive an answer, well, you may just get one soon. at least
know that i actually do read it!

the obligatory blurb about next week.

lag or not, the no type marathon continues, & 2 new releases are planned
for next week (you know what i mean...) first off montréal based artist
james schidlowsky, demonstrating his swooshes, & then the return of
matrix assimilation on the sampling machine (where else) with something
pretty uhm... demented? why, you were expecting something normal? come
on. you know better, don't you?
