I disagree. Hasn't it been established that a work or "text" encompasses all
associated ideas, cultural biases, extra information that a viewer or
listener brings to the reception of the work? To assume otherwise
presupposes an ideal listener who does not know the process/does not know
about the tools in general/knows nothing about music composition....
And isn't it interesting the way the rest of a composers oeuvre can
influence the reception of a single piece? True, much music relies on
concept at the expense of surface aesthetics. But a good critical listener
knows how to hear on many different levels. perhaps all music does not need
to be open sourced, but it benefits the composer not to able to hide behind
a process.
