This one arrived in the post recently and caused much confusion inside the
CD player - and considerable pleasure beyond its skin - aiming a
machine-gun belt of short remix blasts of drastically varying flavors
through the speakers and leaving me with little grasp upon the details of
what I had just absorbed. I do wonder, however, how many omlettes might
have been cooked on the hoods of overheated Powerbooks in the course of
these recordings. How they might have tasted: distorted high speed
breaks, weirdo electro crunch, DSP whittling, processor twitters and
grumbles, and the odd interludes of steady rhythms and calm textures, with
a side order of shrapnel from randomly tormented popular musical forms, all
stirred together by both usual and unusual remixer suspects, with a happy
emphasis on the latter. No flavor overstays its welcome, although a few
might have stayed longer, as if the listener is spun ear-to-keyhole inside
a sphere of odd little worlds without ever having time to grab a door
handle. The list of omitted contributions is as enticing as the disc's
track listing, so it seems we can expect more of these kitty treats in
vinyl form eventually; perhaps some locked grooves will even mirror the
game of cat-chasing-own-tail. More under-the-couch-hairball-breakz than
booty-glitch - with jarring juxtapositions of sounds recalling more than
anything else the surrealism of early Nurse With Wound - but still plenty
of nutrition for microsounders with a sense of humor. Whacky and whacko,
like a hedgehog in a dollhouse carwash. Birdie num num indeed.
