Re: [microsound] mp3 label practicalities, ogg impracticalities

grtz ralph,

[my last beat on the ogg drum, i promise!]

remember a few years ago, when everyone was downloading RealPlayer like mad for
the first time, because Real had convinced content providers that it was a
cheap & easy system for streaming? then everybody got Winamp cause of the
Napster boom, then Windows Media came in and cleaned up house, then Quicktime,
etc etc. each one claimed it was the most comprehensive player of all, and that
you wouldn't need any other. some of these players even fought over your MIME
settings and inserted AUTORUN commands in your registery to make sure that you
only used their product!

the truth is, the software market lives on claims of the "killer app", and even
if OGG is annoying to some Mac users right now, sometime in the next year they
will probably upgrade or switch media players anyway... hopefully to one that
supports OGG. with a tiny bit of education and gentle prodding from forward-
thinking content providers who offer OGG files, this upgrade/switch can be
influenced in a more progressive direction.

best,
d.
