Ah yes, you beat me to it. That's a very lowercase film with a lot of good
stuff to sample if you're so inclined. I know they've been mentioned here
before but The Conversation and Blow Out are two interesting '70s thrillers
dealing with recording and listening. Someone recommended Herzog's Aguirre
but I'd have to throw Heart of Glass out there as his most hypnotic and time
bending film. Sargasso Manuscript is another strange film with a nested
structure of a story within a story within a story... and it has a great
soundtrack.
I saw Punch Drunk Love based on Kim's recommendation and thought it was
great. How many Adam Sandler movies feature a harmonium as a recurring
element?
Also I'd like to recommend the Lord of the Rings 4 disc DVD for anyone
interested in sound design. There's a great short segment of interviews
with the sound designers that shows them out recording sounds in the field
and discussing how they created various sound effects.
