Complex Systems in Composition and Improvisation
This issue will present a broad, contemporary perspective on
electronic and electroacoustic music utilising complex systems. Such
systems would include mathematical generative systems (for example
using iterated function systems); computational models (as in
artificial life, artificial chemistry or physical modelling); and
complex physical systems. These systems may be used as generative
systems, conceptual models, data sources, or theoretical tools.
Theoretical perspectives and analyses, as well as reports on creative
practice, are encouraged. Contributors are sought from across a range
of sonic and musical practices including computer / electronic music,
sound art, installation, improvisation, and experimental music.
Topics may include:
* Self-organisation of micro- and macro-scale structures
* Emergence, surprise and compositional intention
* Artificial and hybrid (human/non-human) musical agencies
* Artificial evolution
* Complex systems in real-time DSP
* Improvising with complex systems / improvisation as complex system
* Physical/embodied complex systems
* Musical aesthetics of complexity
* Sonification: hearing complex systems
Please note that "Organised Sound" also accepts articles outside the
theme of each issue at any time.
Deadline for submissions is 1 December 2003. Submissions may consist
of papers with optional supporting audio and/or audio-visual material
that will be presented as part of the journal's annual CD-ROM (to
appear with issue 9/3) or on a dedicated website.
Issue specific enquiries should be addressed to:
David Worrall (David.Worrall@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) or
Mitchell Whitelaw (Mitchell.Whitelaw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
General Enquiries should be addressed to Leigh Landy (llandy@xxxxxxxxx).
