[microsound] [OT] turing, AI and art

just finished watching 2001 for the umpteenth time, two bottles of wine
later, and started to do some internet searches on alan turing and found
his original 'Computing Machinery and Intelligence' paper online. until
now, i had never actually read the original. i love this kind of stuff
and thought i'd share the link:
http://www.abelard.org/turpap/turpap.htm

despite the enthusiasm surrounding SETI and the possibility of
other-worldly contact it amazes me how little preparation and philosophy
surround the very real possibility that our first 'alien' encounter in
all probability will be with a computer.

i don't really buy into the whole matrix/terminator viewpoint. it seems
irrational that anything that intelligent would be malicious. that
said, there has been very few forays into what form AI might actually
take. i'd be curious to hear some viewpoints on 'first contact
scenarios.'

i, for one, would be very interested to find out what kind of art true
AIs might make, although i doubt we would be able to comprehend. i've
always thought of art as something 'human-centric' in the sense that
everything audio-visual is geared to our unique sensory 'bandwidth' as a
species (i.e. visible light, audible frequencies). alien art, or AI art,
wouldn't necessarily adhere to to these biological restraints (dog music
would beyond our hearing range, if they could compose music...). it's a
shame, but at the same time, i think that's what makes art so special,
unlike mathematics and physics, which is universal, art is something
inherently human, a secret little club just for us... anyway, i ramble
and there are parties to go to.

best,

GRAham 9000
