Cute article at The Guardian by Gavin Bryars. He tells of a performance 
of his music
by early music singers, performed in the refectory of an old convent. 
During the
performance, Bryars' mobile phone starts ringing in his suitcase...

dreadful) ringtone on the mobile myself and as such was providing a 
form of
obbligato accompaniment that could not fail to be stylistically 
coherent ...

He then recalls a performance he conducted in 1986 in Yokohama. During 
an "elegant
piece for solo guitar"...

As the guitarist plucked the perfectly tuned harmonics, allowing them 
to resonate in
the darkness of the vast auditorium, there was a flurry of almost 
identical quiet pings
rebounding from the hall itself    as, over a period of about 20 
seconds - like stars
suddenly and randomly appearing in the night sky - 1,000 digital 
watches indicated
that it was three o'clock. The volume level of those pings, however, 
was exactly that
of the onstage solo guitar. It was as if the music had been 
miraculously and
mysteriously projected into space.
