Groundbreaking Russian art duo chooses St. Louis for the world debut of
new exhibit “X”

Evocative pieces combine visual art with science

ST. LOUIS (December 15, 2003) – Noteworthy Russian art duo Dmitry
Gelfand and Evelina Domnitch will debut their new exhibit entitled “X”
on January 16, 2004 at 4655 Maryland Ave (at Euclid Ave) in the Central
West End at 8:00pm and will run through February 21, 2004. The new
pieces are inspired by the research of German scientist Wilhelm Conrad
Roentgen, who in 1895 discovered that when placing his hand between a
piece of cardboard and the beam from a cathode tube, he could see the
bones inside his fingers within the shadow of his hand. Roentgen soon
realized that these new light waves, which he called x-rays, could also
penetrate wood and other solid matter.

“X”, An Exhibition of X-ray Photographs and Prints exposes the inner
worlds of elaborate biological structures. Not only does the x-ray
light “lay bare” nature’s hidden geometry; it also assumes the quality
of an aura, generously bathing the subjects both inside and out. Most
of the pieces are mounted on their own light sources, which illuminate
the image in great detail. The outcome is beautiful patterns of simple
objects that have an iconic presence on the surface of the pieces.

Artists Dmitry Gelfand and Evelina Domnitch are best known for their
groundbreaking work with the new scientific phenomenon,
sonoluminescence. The duo constructed an art installation that allowed
the naked eye to see sound waves travel through space for the fist
time. Last year the artists were invited to the Institute of Advanced
Media Arts and Sciences (Japan) to develop and exhibit this piece for
both the art and science communities.

Profiles
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Dmitry Gelfand immigrated to St. Louis
with his family at the age of two. In 1992, he left for New York to
attend the film school at NYU. It was in New York that he met and began
collaborating with the Belarussian artist, Evelina Domnitch. Their
work, which combines art and scientific research, has been exhibited at
the White Box and Diapason Galleries (New York), Interferences New
Media Festival (Belfort, France), Mains d’Oevres Gallery (Paris),
Dissonanze Electronic Art Festival (Rome), The Museum of Dreams (St.
Petersburg, Russia). In 2001, through the support of the Langlois
Foundation and the Arts Council of Canada, Quartier Ephemere sponsored
the artists’ first outdoor, municipal installation, Wakening Shrouds,
in Montreal’s Wellington Tunnel. Earlier this year, they were awarded
the Arts Link Grant (New York) for their installation, Machina
Helioscopica, presented at the Minsk Planetarium (Minsk, Belarus).
