Typically, when you give someone a gift and they sell it, they're only
selling it once, and typically, they don't profit from the sale. They sell
it for close to its original value, so they just end up with the monetary
value of the gift. If you give away a digitally-reproducible piece of art,
and someone makes hundreds of copies, sells them, and turns a profit on your
"gift," that's a bit different. It sure is to me, at least.
