Re: [microsound] audio input in PC laptops
Although I prefer RME, you should also consider sound systems with a
direct FireWire connection, like the ones from MOTU.
For RME you'll have to buy more IO-cards (PCMCIA / PCI) - which doens't
come cheap here in Europe - to use your RME system with a desktop and
notebook.
And this thould be generally known: Only buy Digidesign if you only need
to use their software. Their drivers really suck for any other
application to use.
Despite the extra costs and the spectrum boost in the higher area, RME
has a few nifty advantages, eg.:
- thanks to its PCI-busmastering technique it has a latency of 5 msecs
from microphone through PureData to the speakers (you need at least a P4
or something similar to achieve this performance) which is a must for
live audio.
- it supports all kind of drivers like ASIO (1 or 2 I don't know or
care), MME, GSIF from hardware. Except DirectSound but who cares about
that anyway.
- it mixes your audio channels through hardware DSP, leaving your CPU at
peace.
Good equipment just requires a good amount of money and a good amount of
know-how to use it, so before you buy anything make sure you buy whatever
fits your needs and wallet of course ;)
