Re: [microsound] the great depression of experimental music?

there have been a lot of great points made in this thread,,, and a some that i disagree with, too many for me to respond to for sure,, but im very happy with the way that the discussion went on this topic. . . some of you share my fears and concerns and some of you are okay with just getting music online or on cdr format, and both have pros and cons i guess...

i must agree that the signal to noise ratio for mediocre releases vs. release that really stand out .. is very, very poor.... and as mentioned on this list and others,,, many composers are not buying new music,, this was one of my original concerns when posted this topic. this is what i was getting at,,,, if most of the people who listen to this music are composers.... and there is a trend taking places in which composers buys less music,, at least experimental music,, then many, many small labels are going to be forced not to put out releases,,, or to put out releases on (what i consider) a disposable format such as CDRs then i see a bleak future for small labels that are putting out quality CDs, both in music, packaging and the sound quality....

another thing that triggered my post,, was the closer of so many distros,, as lance mentioned even world serpent,, and the sold music that was far more marketable and had a bigger crowd than glitch, i can promise you that....

and has been mentioned, CDRs have there place for people that have no other means to release their work,,, but i have a hard time buying CDRs,, i have to support certain labels,, and i have work out on CDRs on the phonography comps... which i think are a great thing,,,,, but CDRs really feel like cassette tapes to me,,,, and i just cant seem to get on board with that.

someone mentioned that its really about the music,, and of course this is true,,, but in my initial post, i mentioned being a record collector and this is what worries me about CDRs and MP3s. i love having something tactile that goes along with the music,,, i dont think you have to have it to have great music,,, but i really love work that is coupled with beautiful packaging,,, even if it is as simple as a printed sleeve,, im a fan of nice packaging.

i do think MP3s are an amazing tool,, and they most definitely have their place,, i dont trust their longevity,,, since computers crash, back up discs can scratch, and the such,,, but i love the fact that we can distribute free music that means something to ourselves world wide with the ease of the internet. but i also think that MP3s can easily be forgotten, or dismissed after a single listen,,, but i guess this is true with any music format.

and yes most of us have day jobs and will continue to,, that wasnt really a point i was talking about,,, but more about breaking even on the releases that label owners or independent artists put out.

and im not saying i have a separate budget to just buy new music with, or that im a die hard supporter,, just like everyone else i am weary about what i buy,,, but i do try and make a continuous effort to buy artists releases,, even if im friends with them and could possibly get it for free or for trade,,, because i know how the effort they put into releasing it....... the only release that i have bought that was a really, really big disappointment this year was Fennez - Veince,,,, which is another thread all together,,,, "well know artists that sell lots of records even though their work grows more and more pointless" ----- im sure that will ruffle some feathers.
