At first this looks good but there are way too many exceptions 
even if you include apprenticeship. For instance Richard Wagner 
is often cited as having next to no formal training. 

There is a sort of unseemliness to the aplication of the label. It is a 
sort of stamp by the establishment that an artist is not qualified as 
a member though there is something compelling about the work 
that can't be dismissed. 

Most of the time it's more than implied that these people are also 
outsiders in society with perhaps veiled implication of mental 
illness. One important factor is these people are compelled to 
create. 

On the subject of say Sunday afternoon painting and groovebox 
jams, that material easily falls into the context of hobby or 
recreation.
