Well, to me the experience and knowledge gained in experimental music makes
many questions that come up in more conventional music (which is the sort of
music that actually pays (well....)) a lot easier to deal with. Knowing the
difference between iir and fir filters is realy very usefull if from time to
time you end up trying to get a disco track on vinyl as loudly and good
sounding as possible, for example. I also think that once a controll scheme
has been developed in a experimental music context it´s often ready to be
aplied to more straightforward areas. The motion sesnsors so well suited for
experimental work look much better on a club stage then a mere groovebox,
it´s only the other producers that think a groovebox looks more interesting
then a laptop but the "club kids" like it when waving your hand makes the
filter growl.

I also think that the kind of ear you develop in experimental music makes
you a better audio engineer, in dance clubs soundchecks is very usefull if
you can immediately tell the difference between the need to move a light
dimmer to a different group or to groundlift some bit of gear that has a
clock leaking into the audio chain, even if those two can sound very similar
to the untrained ear.

That´s often the kind of thing I do....

One other note; the other way around works too. I studied arteficial
intelligence for a year before dropping out and found that having lots of
classes on formal logice makes one much better at modular synthesis and of
cource the neural nets come in quite handy in controll schemes from time to
time.

Interesting topic.
