Another thing to consider is how very different the outcome will be
from a locked groove. A skipping record will have, by virtue of how
the skip is present, a popping, percussive sound at the point where
the groove is interrupted. A locked groove is much smoother.
I've heard of people using a spot of glue at a point in the record -
probably not something to do with a high end needle - on a Califone
perhaps?
can't you just lock the needle arm in whatever position you want --
that'll be tough on the needle, using it as a manual chisel, but
surely that'd work. depending on if you are doing something live or
working/playing in the studio...
