I have tried these things a fair amount and you are right, everyone I
talk to says experience is the only real way. I have tried all the
methods and tools you mentioned before but I guess I was looking for a
silver bullet of sorts, which of course there is none. I was told once
that if pan is x-axis then reverb is z-axis, which has helped my
thinking about sound arrangement and mixdown. I was looking for a book
with tips like that. Oh well, I guess there is no quick way to master
the mix...
BTW: microsound was an 8 out of 10 IMO and a good introduction to
granular synthesis. I wish Roads' books had more recipies but I like
them lots. I haven't been exposed to the books Frank mentioned though.
