Listen to Frank, he's a very good teacher of computer music :-) .

Again, I cannot stress enough that if you know the fundamentals, you
will go beyond the mediocre world of derivative works!  Having fifty
plug-ins won't hide a bad (or nonexistant) concept.

But plug-ins can do some great things too.  I'd reccommend using
standard plugins that are more like the unit generators of yore,
instead of one-trick ponies.  Even so, I love using Live (it's the
most responsive and flexible real-time computer music system I've ever
used, with a great interface and intense algorithmic economy).  There
are so many tricks you can learn just by fiddling with the parameters,
I'm amazed that people dog on it.

The more theory you learn, you can apply to any environment, be it
audacity, impulse tracker, csound, acid 3, etc, and your music will
sound awesome.
