Analogies may not always be "fair," but they may be useful.

You perhaps misread me - my suggestion was not that there was anything
intrinsically damaging about, for example, painting, but simply that
blinding yourself does not improve your eyesight.  Just as being a sculptor
doesn't atrophy your hands - the point is, not having hands might effect
your ability to be a sculptor.

But, I think, we basically agree - if your ears rang for a week, you
suffered some measure of permanent loss.  Glad you don't want to do it
again.
