Re: [microsound] I want myspace MTV
just as i thought a bout of common sense and decency was breaking out
here....
final: most of us have had enough of the one liner updates containing
the myspace account info...yes, you're cool for having a myspace
account -
what sort of a put down is this? it makes the presupposes entirely
unjustifiably that one has a myspace account in order to be cool.
apparently university educated souls are willing to put their
intellectual prowess to one side and make such comments, which is a
shame.
let's get something straight. some people here have the privilege of
tertiary education and / or a good musical network or geographical
situation in order to build up contacts and further their career. there
is nothing intrinsically wrong with this. others however have not had
this support or are in places in the world where promoting oneself
through 'traditional' means is a difficult, perhaps expensive and time
consuming process. myspace (amongst other means) allows such artists to
make connections one could only have dreamt of 20 years ago. myspace
offers potential for some - not all - artists. whoever used the phrase
earlier 'garbage in, garbage out' was spot on. myspace MAY be useful,
it MAY also be a complete waste of time. i could go on, but i just
can't be bothered in the light of repeated - and maybe even willful -
misunderstanding of some common sense posts here.
The problem I have with myspace specifically is that it is trying to
(and apparently succeding in large amounts to) monopolize what is
called "social networks". A similar thing happened in the past with
ebay: Without selling anything themselves, they managed to get a firm
grasp on grassroots markets, that is, the market, where everyone
without a big budget could sell something. Today, if ebay throws you
out, you're out of business.
A similar thing is happening to social networks currently. Now we
still have several providers of these services, like friendster etc.
and there is a *huge* interest or even fight for them involving the
big players like Yahoo or Google.
But as with ebay, only the biggest one will survive and concentrate *a
lot* of power in his hands, this time not power over sellers of second
hand goods, but over the ways, artists try to get famous, amongst
other things. Imagine two years from now, myspace being the sole
"social network" provider left. If myspace throws you out, you're out
not only of myspace, but you're out of the whole myspace community and
nobody there will show interest in your music anymore, because they
don't know it exists.
these are genuine concerns well expressed.
once again peace & goodwill
