Re: [microsound] nin

Yes this is interesting. First impressions become more important due to the disposable nature of the medium. I'm sure we all have albums in our collections that took real time to appreciate and learn to love.

I wonder how this might change a composition itself... Knowing it would be given away as a free download.

For example, I tend to delete freely downloaded albums after just one
listen. Sometimes even before one listen, in the case of NIN, to tell
the truth. There's no attechment, no motivation if the first listen is
not rewarding.

Of course that can be said about "illegal" downloads. But it would be
strange to imagine a world where every music is "free" so you don't
buy anything, not attached to anything that much - maybe first listen
impressions would have a greater role there. As opposed to this world,
where you download a lot of music, buy much more less, but pay more
attention to the latter. (In my case at least.)

My girlfriend asked me an interesting question last night regarding the
giving away of music.

She wondering if I could see anything detrimental about it... And it's been on my mind. Is this only positive for the artist and listeners? Any
negatives at all?

but I DL'd the new NIN release yesterday and was very impressed with it
it is a free download
available in one of four formats: mp3, flac, m4a, 96/24 wav:

my respect for Mr Reznor has deepened quite a bit in the past few years
screwing the music industry one free album at a time! ;)
