Re: [microsound] nin

The three main arguments I have heard against mp3 only releases are:
MP3 is an inferior file format, there is more inherent visual
expression with physical packaging and lastly virtual releases are too
easy which leads to a flood of sub par releases since anyone can do it.

My responses to the following arguments are:

1.MP3 is an inferior file format

Sure low bitrate files can sound bad and there even may be some
artifacts in high bitrate files but in regards to the later I don't
think it's noticeable enough to really matter and clearly the consumer
is fine with it much to the chagrin of audiophiles everywhere.

There are also alternatives to mp3's for virtual releases like FLAC
files etc.

2.There is more inherent visual expression with physical packaging.

Okay putting commodity fetishes aside is this really that important. If
you listen to the music over and over how often do you really look at
the packaging especially if most of your listening is on an ipod
shuffle. I admit that I am a sucker for packaging but shouldn't it
really be about the music?

I'd say that this NIN release does fall flat because clearly he has the
resources to attempt a virtual presentation of some sort but I wouldnt'
expect this from everyone.

3.Virtual releases are too easy.

Sure it is.. but if you argue 1 and 2 already then most likely you're
not going to give much respect to anyone who releases virtually.

The other part of this argument is that people who are spending money
in some capacity to put out a physical release will put more care into
the music itself. I think this is debatable.. really the problem is
that inexperienced people will put out stuff. That doesn't mean you
have to listen to it. This last argument is the most debatable imo.
