not only does this make sense, but i agree wholeheartedly.
i was not going to add my two cents; however, this seems like
a very pertinent discussion for most on this list :
i also concur with whoever mentioned the venue location
playing a more pivotal role. [i believe this was mentioned]
if not, then it does. period. a majority of my recent shows
have been in 'museum' like settings with chairs lined-up in
rows and columns as people await a 'presentation'. video or
no video - 3, 4, 5 acts in a row of ambient // generalization i know //
music with laptops /andor tibetan bowls makes for a long
evening. i believe the beauty of museums is largely the spectators'
ability to dictate his/her own viewership schedule.
whenever i have been fortunate enough to play 'ambient' music
in a populated smokey bar with mingling people [some paying
close attention - some scurrying to the door - MOST still chatting]
the performance has been an overwhelming success. i especially,
like reaching people who have never heard of microsound@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
some of my personal favourite experiences have been noticing
ten minutes into the conversation - 'wait a minute - i fucking
like this . . . . alot' even though i didn't pause to notice an act
had actually started 10 minutes ago. i don't care what he/she is
doing - it sounds great.
the only folks i have ever heard debating what software he/she is
using and how much is live/knobs or whatever has been those who
frequent these lists. i totally appreciate the conversation and
knowledge dispersed across the hyperreal netwerk as i work on my
own pieces; but, many i have spoken to who have a more distant
relationship with the music really only focus on the music. to a
degree we are pretty hardcore about the subject of 'experimental
music'.
the sad part is we are often a good portion of the crowd. a dilemma,
i know.
i used to go to mr. chartier's dc night where the music we enjoy
was basically being spun and everyone seemed to have a good time
and didn't question how the music got squeezed onto record grooves.
some watched the videos all night - others danced. i drank bourbon.
things just seems to go better with jack daniels and a dube. i digress.
the end..
