Re: [microsound] Help for the beginner and Hello's
it certainly is down to compression, eq and reverb. recording and good
convertors are of course equally important if you're recording
anyhting.
there's no magic bullet.
you can get some extra shine with extremely expensive mastering gear,
but for digital music, I really don't think that' necessary. if you do,
have it done professionally, there specialized in it.
i disagree with some parts of this post, but am curious...

If you want to avoid the wall-of-mud sound you should first take care
of the voicing of the sounds going into the mix.You can try to use
different software when creating sounds to avoid everything having the
same sonic character. If you use 24-bit (or more) recording keep peak
levels on individual channels below -16dB. Enable all dithering you
can find on your DAW.
are you sure about that? when recording at those levels, you're losing
a lot of bits. better to dither, but only at the last stage, before
converting to 16bit.
When you get to the mix use the best EQ you own (lesser ones tend to
impart their ow character over every sound) to (at least as a start)
gently tweak the sounds. Use nothing else on the mix until you get it
right. Use the mixer, ride the levels. Be very careful with reverb.
good ones can do this too, which can be a good thing, though i like
them better clean.
Finally avoid any mastering plug-ins or multi-band compressors. They
will mash any mix into a mud-pool. I prefer to just use gentle
single-band compression followed by a limiter. Never normalize the mix
to 0dB, stop at -6DB to avoid distorting the majority of D/A:s on the
market.
multi-band compressors can be great, but must be dealt with very
carefully. single band compression followed by a limiter can equally
fast destroy your dynamics. aren't limiters mastering tools anyway?
-6dB is very low, I'd rather 3, especially if you're already recording
at -16dB at 24bit.
cheers
