I prefer visiting the sites of collectives, labels, groups, and individual
artists. As a sidenote, I like to learn about the philosophies and
activities of artists as a way to enrich my own understanding of music,
composition, and performance. That's seperate from just experiencing the
music, but I find that these sites are more conducive to substance.

If I wanted people to experience my projects, I would want them to do just
that - not have flashy things for cell phone ringtones anywhere near it!
Those who have resources and ability, I would advise to create their own
site. Even something basic is commendable - the text-only aesthetic can be
very nice and easy to update. Get involved with something like a serious
webring, which can have very many nice sites attached to it.

That said, I remember reading something that blogs and myspaces &etc have a
culture of personal importance and validation attached to them. Obviously
this is only an undercurrent, but it explains why some enjoy writing a
public diary or posting works that are still quite embryonic.
